This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in Genesis 32:24-32, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
Once upon a time, there was a man named Jacob. One night, Jacob was all alone when a man came and started wrestling with him. They wrestled all night long, and the man saw that he couldn’t beat Jacob. So, the man touched Jacob’s leg, and it hurt so much that Jacob’s hip came out of its socket! But Jacob still wouldn’t let go.
When morning came, the man said, “Let me go now that it’s daytime.” But Jacob said, “No, I won’t let you go until you bless me.” The man asked Jacob, “What’s your name?” and Jacob answered, “My name is Jacob.” Then the man said, “Your name will not be Jacob anymore, but Israel. You have fought with God and people and won.” Jacob then asked the man his name, but the man didn’t say it. Instead, he blessed Jacob.
Jacob called the place where he wrestled with the man “Peniel,” which means “face of God” because he felt like he saw God’s face. He also walked with a limp because of his injured hip. That’s why the people of Israel still don’t eat the meat on the hip’s socket today.
