This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in Mark 14:32-42, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
Once, Jesus and His disciples went to a special place called Gethsemane. He asked His friends Peter, James, and John to stay with Him while He prayed. Jesus felt very sad and troubled, almost like He was going to die. He told His friends to watch over Him while He prayed.
Jesus went a little farther and fell on the ground. He talked to His Father in heaven and said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Please take away this cup of suffering from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want.” Jesus asked God to take away the bad things that were going to happen to Him, but He also said that He wanted God’s plan to be done, not His own.
When Jesus went back to His friends, He found them sleeping! Jesus woke up Peter and said, “Peter, are you sleeping? Can’t you stay awake for even one hour? Watch and pray so that you won’t fall into temptation.” Jesus knew that it was hard for them to stay awake because they were tired, but He also knew that it was important to keep watch and pray.
Jesus went to pray two more times and each time He found His friends sleeping. The third time He came back, He told them that it was time for Him to be arrested. Jesus knew that His time was up and that He had to go through a difficult time. He told His friends to wake up and get ready to go.
