This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in 2 Kings 2:1-11, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
Elijah was a very important man who spoke to God and did many miracles.
One day, God told Elijah that he was going to take him up to heaven in a whirlwind. As Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal to Bethel, Elijah asked Elisha to stay behind. But Elisha said that he would not leave Elijah’s side. So, they traveled together to Bethel, where some of the sons of the prophets saw them.
The sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”
Later, when they were traveling from Jericho to the Jordan River, Elijah asked Elisha to stay behind again. But Elisha refused and stayed with Elijah. The sons of the prophets who were in Jericho saw them and said to Elisha, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”
Even though the sons of the prophets knew that Elijah was going to be taken up to heaven, Elisha was determined to stay by his side.
Finally, they went to a river called the Jordan, and fifty men came to watch them. Elijah took his cloak and hit the water with it, and the water split apart so they could cross the river on dry land. When they got to the other side, Elijah asked Elisha if there was anything he could do for him before he went up to heaven.
Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, which meant he wanted to be just as close to God as Elijah was. Elijah said that it was a hard thing to ask for, but if Elisha saw him being taken up to heaven, he would get what he asked for.
As they were talking, a whirlwind came and chariots of fire and horses of fire appeared. Elijah was taken up to heaven in the whirlwind, and Elisha was left behind. But Elisha knew that God had given him the double portion of Elijah’s spirit, and he went on to do many great things for God.
