This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in Numbers 26, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
Once upon a time, the Lord asked Moses and Eleazar the priest to count all the people in Israel who were old enough to go to war. They were supposed to count all the people who were twenty years old or older. So, Moses and Eleazar went to the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho to start counting the people.
They counted all the people from the different tribes of Israel. The first tribe they counted was Reuben, and there were 43,730 people in that tribe. Then they counted the tribe of Simeon and found 22,200 people. They counted the tribe of Gad, which had 40,500 people. After that, they counted the tribe of Judah, which had 76,500 people. They also counted the tribes of Issachar – 64,300, Zebulun – 60,500, Joseph (which included Manasseh and Ephraim) – 85,200, Benjamin – 45,600, Dan – 64,400, Asher – 53,400, and Naphtali – 45,400. In total, there were 601,730 people in Israel.
The Lord told Moses that the land would be divided among the tribes according to the number of people in each tribe. The bigger tribes would get bigger lands, and the smaller tribes would get smaller lands.
Moses and Eleazar also counted the Levites, who were the people in charge of the tabernacle and taking care of the holy things. The Levites were divided into clans, and they counted 23,000 Levite men who were a month old or older.
Biblical Lessons
- God is interested in the details of our lives and cares about each one of us individually.
- It’s important to be organized and keep track of things, just as Moses and Eleazar counted the people and kept records.
- Every person counts and is important, no matter how big or small their role might seem.
- God has a plan for each of our lives and wants us to trust in Him to lead us and guide us along the way.
