This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in Leviticus 17, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
Once upon a time, God talked to Moses and said, “Tell Aaron and his sons, and all the people of Israel, that I have a command for them.” This is what God wanted them to know: “If someone in Israel kills a cow, a sheep, or a goat, but doesn’t bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to offer it as a gift to Me, that person will be punished. This is because he has shed blood, and that person will be cut off from the people. I want people to bring their animals to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and sacrifice them as gifts to Me. The priest will throw the blood on the altar and burn the fat as a pleasing smell to Me. They should not sacrifice their animals to goat demons anymore. This law will be forever for them and their children.”
God also said, “If anyone, whether they are from Israel or a stranger living among them, wants to offer a burnt offering or sacrifice, they must bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to offer it to Me. If they don’t, they will be punished and cut off from their people.”
Then God said, “If anyone from Israel or a stranger among them eats any blood, I will be angry with that person and cut them off from their people. The life of a creature is in its blood, and I have given it to you to make amends for your sins. Therefore, you cannot eat blood. Also, if you hunt an animal or a bird that you can eat, you must pour out its blood and cover it with dirt. You cannot eat the blood of any creature because the life of the creature is in its blood. If you eat blood, you will be punished and cut off from your people. If a person eats an animal that died on its own or was killed by a wild animal, they must wash their clothes and take a bath. They will be unclean until evening, then they will be clean. If they don’t clean themselves, they will be punished.”
Biblical Lessons
- God cares about our physical and spiritual well-being, and His laws are designed to protect us.
- Sacrifices were an important part of worship in the Old Testament, but they were ultimately fulfilled in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
- The shedding of blood was a necessary component of the atonement for sin, pointing forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus.
- God desires obedience and proper worship from His people, and disobedience or improper worship can have serious consequences.
