Jesus Cleanses the Temple – Bible Story for Kids

This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in John 2:13-22, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.

One day, Jesus went to the temple in Jerusalem. It was a special time of year called Passover, and many people were there. When Jesus got to the temple, he saw some people selling animals like oxen, sheep, and pigeons. He also saw some people who were changing money.

Jesus didn’t like what he saw. He knew that the temple was a special place where people came to worship God, and he didn’t want people selling things there. So he made a whip out of cords and used it to drive out the sellers and the animals. He even overturned the tables of the money-changers and poured out their coins!

Then Jesus spoke to the people who were selling pigeons and told them to take their things and leave. He said, “Take these things away. Don’t make my Father’s house a house of trade.”

The Jews who saw what Jesus did asked him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” But Jesus didn’t answer their question directly. Instead, he said something that confused them. He said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

The Jews were surprised because they knew it had taken a long time to build the temple. They wondered how Jesus could rebuild it in just three days because it has taken forty-six years to build the temple.

But Jesus wasn’t talking about the actual temple building. He was talking about his own body. He knew that he would die and then rise again from the dead three days later.

Later on, when Jesus did die and rise again, his disciples remembered what he had said. They believed in Jesus and knew that he was truly the Son of God.

We should respect and honor God’s house and not use it for our own gain.
Jesus is the Son of God and came to save us from our sins.
We should not use religion as a means of making money or taking advantage of people.
Jesus’ actions in the temple show that he is passionate about God’s house and how it is being used.
Jesus’ actions also demonstrate his willingness to stand up for what is right, even if it means going against the status quo or upsetting people.
Jesus’ statement about rebuilding the temple in three days is a prophecy of his death and resurrection, which is the most important event in Christian history.
