This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in Luke 2:41-52, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
Once there was a boy named Jesus. He went to Jerusalem with his parents every year for the Feast of the Passover. When he turned twelve, they went to Jerusalem as usual, but when the feast ended, Jesus stayed behind in the city.
His parents did not know he was missing and thought he was with their group. They traveled for a day and then realized that Jesus was not with them. They looked for him among their relatives and friends, but they could not find him. So they went back to Jerusalem and searched for him there.
After three days, they found him sitting in the temple, listening and asking questions to the teachers. The teachers were amazed at how smart Jesus was. When Jesus’ parents saw him, they were surprised too!
His mother asked Jesus, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” Then Jesus replied, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
His parents did not understand what he meant. Then Jesus went back home to Nazareth with his parents and was obedient to them.
And Jesus grew in intelligence, stature, and favor with God and man.
Biblical Lessons
- It’s important to seek knowledge and learn about God, just like Jesus did in the temple.
- Jesus was confident in his purpose and mission, even at a young age. We should also strive to find our purpose and trust in God’s plan for us.
- Jesus’ parents had faith and trusted in God’s plan for their son, even when they didn’t understand everything he did or said. We should also trust in God’s plan, even if we don’t always understand it.
- Jesus’ response to his parents shows us the importance of being respectful and considerate when we communicate with others, especially our parents.
