This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in 1 Samuel 21:1-6, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.
A long time ago, David has been anointed as the future king of Israel by the prophet Samuel, but he is still serving in Saul’s army and is on the run from Saul, who has become jealous of David’s popularity and is trying to kill him.
One day, David needed some food and was all by himself. He went to see a priest named Ahimelech in a town called Nob. Ahimelech was very scared when he saw David and asked him why he was alone. David told the priest that the king had sent him on a secret mission and he needed some food. He asked the priest if he had any bread.
Ahimelech told him that he only had holy bread, which was meant only for the priests to eat. However, Ahimelech gave the holy bread to David and his men to eat because he thought it was better to help them than to let them go hungry. The priest did ask David if the young men had kept themselves from women, as this was a requirement for eating the holy bread. David assured the priest that his men had indeed kept themselves from women, and so the priest allowed them to eat the holy bread.
