The Fall of Ai – Bible Story for Kids

This is a simplified version of the Bible story found in Joshua 8:1-29, written for children to understand. For the original version, please refer to the Bible passage.

Once upon a time, God told Joshua to attack the city called Ai and He gave instructions on how to do it. It’s an important step in the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land to fulfill God’s promises to the Israelites and to give them the land of Canaan.

The Lord told Joshua and his army not to be afraid to go and attack the city. God said that He would help them win the battle and conquer the city. Joshua chose 30,000 brave soldiers to go and hide near the city while he and his other soldiers went to the front of the city to make the people come out to fight.

When the people of Ai came out to fight, Joshua and his soldiers pretended to run away, and the people of Ai chased them far away from their city. But the soldiers who were hiding came out of their hiding place and attacked the city of Ai from the back. At that time, Joshua raised his javelin towards the city of Ai as a sign for the ambush team to attack. They quickly ran towards the city, captured it, and set it on fire.

When the people of Ai saw the smoke, they knew they were beaten, and they couldn’t escape because Joshua and his soldiers were blocking their way. Joshua and his soldiers then defeated the people of Ai and killed everyone in the city, except for the king.

After the battle was over, 12,000 people from Ai had died, both men and women. They took all the animals and valuable things they found, just as God had told them they could. Joshua and his soldiers destroyed everything in Ai and burned it to the ground, so that it was left in ruins.

They also captured the king of Ai and hung him on a tree. Later, they took his body down and put it at the entrance of the city, under a big pile of rocks, where it still is today.

With God’s help, Joshua and his soldiers won the battle, just as God had promised.
